Communication Models — Brief Explanation (English + Kannada)

1. Linear Model

English:

The Linear Model of Communication is the simplest; it treats communication as a one-way process. A sender encodes a message, sends it through a channel, the receiver receives and decodes it. There is usually no feedback. Noise (interference) may distort the message in the channel. Wikipedia+2Xavier University+2

Kannada:

2. Interactional Model

English:
The Interactional Model adds feedback to the process. After the sender sends a message and the receiver decodes it, the receiver sends back a reaction or feedback. There is more interactivity. Context (fields of experience, previous knowledge) matters in how messages are interpreted. Xavier University+3OpenStax+3Atlantis School Of Communication+3

Kannada:

3. Transactional Model

English:
The Transactional Model views communication as dynamic, ongoing, where all parties are simultaneously senders and receivers. Meaning is co-created. Communication is influenced by physical, psychological, social contexts. It’s more realistic for face-to-face, conversational interactions. Kannada:

4. Shannon-Weaver Model

English:
This is a Linear model developed by Claude Shannon & Warren Weaver. It includes components like Source, Transmitter, Channel, Receiver, Destination. It also adds the idea of noise interfering in transmission. It’s useful for technical/telecommunications contexts. Wikipedia+1

Kannada:

5. Lasswell’s Model

English:
Lasswell’s model is a linear communication model often used for analysing mass communication. It is built around five questions: “Who says what in which channel to whom with what effect?” It’s good for understanding media messages and their effect. Wikipedia+1

Kannada:
“ಯಾರು (Who) – ಏನು (What) – ಯಾವ ಚಾನೆಲ್ (Channel) – ಯಾರಿಗೆ (To Whom) – ಯಾವ ಪರಿಣಾಮ (Effect)?”

Why these models matter /

  • They help us structure how we think about communication: Sender, Message, Channel, Receiver, Feedback, Noise, Context.
  • They show the limitations: for example, Linear models can’t explain feedback, context, evolving relationships.
  • They guide practical application: designing effective communication campaigns, media, interpersonal communication, etc.
